On a morning walk in Denver 1972, Srila Prabhupada startled his disciples by likening the devotee, to a snake! It was 6:30 am, Prabhupada was out on his morning walk, and he was especially appreciating the park the devotees had taken him to, which was otherwise empty. ‘The mouse is digging a hole, and then the big snake comes and eats the mouse, and lives in the hole. So the devotees are like snakes, the materialistic men are working so hard and making these big municipal facilities and parks etc. for enjoyment, but then the devotees actually come and use them.’
So we are trying to follow in the footsteps of the serpent like devotees in our ‘Bash Crash’ Harinama Festival. ‘Hash Bash’, one of the nations oldest running and most attended marijuana legalization rally’s, is held the first weekend of April on University of Michigan Ann Arbor’s campus. The assembled debauchees hear cannabis katha for 2 hours before stepping off of campus property (which upholds strict state laws in regards to hashing and bashing) and attend a huge street party just south of campus on city property, their by taking advantage of Ann Arbors luridly lax local marijuana ordinances.
The devotees had always done walking harinama’s at the Bash, which attracts 100,000 people, but beginning last year we started reserving a pavilion on campus which happens to be the epicenter of all foot traffic for the event.
Last years event our attention was misdirected. We’d made plans for all sorts of activities like t-shirt painting, sidewalk chalking, henna etc. to be going on in the pavillion. This over endeavor for mundane things (money) was a memorable failure. Thankfully the Holy Name prevailed that day and we had lots of chanting and dancing, but it was clear so much could have and should be done differently.
This year, we focused on beautifully broadcasting the Holy Name, while providing plenty of opportunity for people to take a book, and prasadam. Whats more, we had a huge team of helpers with congregation families, lots of devotees from the Chicago and Detroit temples, even our GBC Malati Mataji was able to come which gave a huge boost of confidence to all the devotees assembled… Of course this program, Prabhupada’s program, was a huge success.
we’d like to thank Chicago temple for allowing so many of their young able bodies come and serve with us. We’d like to thank Ananda Swarupa and Sri Badrayani Prabhus and their families in Detroit-Metro for coordinating such excellent prasadam, and also Indra Dev for such nice weather. Also thank you to the many devotees past and present who have served in Ann Arbor. HH Indradyumna Maharaja met the devotees on what we now call ‘Krishna’s Corner’ (our favorite harinama spot), Anutama Prabhu, Mother Mukhya, HH Badrinarayana Maharaja… all these great souls hail from Ann Arbor so whatever success we are having is simply riding the coat tails of their mercy. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada, Sri Guru and Gouranga!
