The vibrant procession featured three huge, brightly coloured wooden carts being pulled by hand along the route from Hyde Park Corner to Trafalgar Square.
Children and adults gathered to watch as the altar deities from London’s Soho Street Hare Krishna temple – Lord Jagannatha, Lord Baladeva and Lady Subhadra – went past accompanied by traditional music, singing and dancing.
The Rathayatra parade – also known as the Festival of Chariots – was first celebrated in India more than 2,000 years ago, and has become a fixture in London’s calendar, this year marking its 46th anniversary. It is hosted by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
The festival, which featured participants adorned in jewels, flowers and body paint, ended with free vegetarian meals being distributed among worshippers.
